Over
the years I have received spectacular rose bouquets for birthdays and special
occasions and adored them all. Some were very fragrant, others not so much, but
each was a memorable gift. However, it was not until I started growing
roses, that I gained a true appreciation for them and finally understood the
saying "Stop and smell the roses."
I
really didn't know that they all smell different, very different. This exploration alone has been amazing, but it is the tip of the iceberg (okay, I know some of you are now thinking about Iceberg roses). The color
varieties, the way they bloom, the number of petals, their different uses in gardens and landscapes, and the subtleties of their different fragrances is astounding.
Now, with over 50 rose varieties and growing, I get it. I see their
individuality and love every nuance, even the fact that some bite more than
others.
Sometimes I'll walk by and their thorns will catch my clothing as if to say "Don't be so cavalier and dismiss us.
We're here to be admired." They certainly are. It’s a
gentle reminder that stops me in my tracks and gives me a moment of pure
enjoyment.
Make
time to smell and celebrate the roses; it is one of the great things about garden living.
